Subject: Administrativia
Dear Lowlanders,
Things have been slowing down a bit lately on the List, as they usually
do during the Northern Hemisphere summer vacation (i.e. holiday)
season. I hope our members on that half of the globe are having a good
and relaxing time. If you plan to be absent, please write to me, and I
will switch your subscriptions to vacation mode. You will need to write
to me again after your return, and I will switch your subscription back
to normal. (You no longer need to sign off and on as you had to in the
past.)
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome several new Lowlanders,
including a few that have rejoined us. You will find a list of their
places of resident at the end of this posting.
Things have not been quite as slow behind the scenes. Particularly
worth mentioning are the efforts of Mathieu van Woerkom, lately the
busiest of all the LL-L beavers. He has been at it, quietly doing great
things for the List, including performing some of his web magic.
We have moved to a new server (with a couple of hiccups, for which you
beg your pardon), run by a company in the Netherlands that offers all
that we want and need. So far its service seems to be much more solid,
reliable and responsive than those of any previous services we have
experienced between us. Mathieu has been handling virtually all
technical and creative jobs and has been an enormous source of support
to me. His work tends to exceed all expectations, always ends up with
an extra flourish or two. He has not only taken on all the moving jobs
but some voluntary interior design as well, giving our site
(http://www.lowlands-l.net) yet another new, sleeker look. Time and
opportunity permitting, and giving Onze Mathieu free reign, bigger and
greater things will materialize soon.
Our informational companion site "Lowlands Talk"
(http://www.lowlands-l.net/talk/) is currently in the process of
updating and revamping, also under Mathieu, lately with particularly
noteworthy translation assistance from Reynaldo Pimentel Damy Castro
(Brazil), Roman Laryushkin (Ukraine) and, as the newest member of our
team of young LL-L gung-ho, youthful powerhouses: Kenneth Rohde
Christiansen (Denmark). Special _Muito obrigado!_, _Shchyro dyakuyu!_
and _Mange tak!_ respectively to them. There are several other team
members, and their names are mentioned on the acknowledgement pages.
Please keep watching "Lowlands Talk," and please consider helping us
with translation and composition efforts (in which case I ask you to
write to me and Mathieu). We (again mostly Mathieu) have also been
quietly preparing a dictionary service that we hope will be very useful
to all of you and anyone else in the world. Please look out for that to
materialize, and please offer your help if you possibly can.
I just returned (quite exhausted) from a road trip through Western
Canada, visiting recently (re-)discovered relatives in Southern Alberta
(including born and bred Canadians!) and dear Lowlands-related friends
in Southern British Columbia, at the same time taking in the exquisite,
breathtaking and vast beauty of that country (and it does go on and on,
seemingly forever) and gaining a little more insight into regional
variation of Canadian English. In the meantime, Mathieu was in charge
of the LL-L steering wheel. So there's another kudos to you, Mathieu!
Thanks, bud!
Lowlanders, please remember that this is first and foremost *your*
forum. While you are perfectly entitled to quietly "lurk" in the
background, I encourage you to share anything Lowlands-related with us
or to ask relevant questions. There is no need to feel self-conscious
about your language skills and what you assume to be insufficient
expertise. You really need not feel intimidated by what to you may seem
like expert discussions among others. Rest assured that we will not
make you feel bad! Also, please feel free to use the Lowlands languages
you are learning. Your skills need not be perfect. Again, no one will
put you down about it, and you will most likely get people to give you
constructive feedback. This is the message I have been trying to convey
indirectly by occasionally writing in Plautdietsch, Dutch, Afrikaans,
Scots and Westerlauwer Frisian, none of which I am good at but am
learning and am greatly enjoying.
Lots of new subscribers are interested in Appalachian. So please, by
all means tell or ask us about that topic. Many of us are interested in
it.
If you have not already done so, please familiarize yourselves with our
rules and guidelines (which are accessible from our homepage).
On behalf of the Lowlands-L Team, I thank you all for your interest and
support.
Friendly regards,
Reinhard/Ron
