A good gusty modern Scots singer and writers is Michael Marra - ( hope this
is o.k to give this info that follows ) -you can find out stuff about him,
email him and see a discography at:
http://www.baillie.net/ics/marra/main/mm_home.htm . He has a very
distinctive voice. You should also look up Shenna Wellington who is very
lyrical -at times  -and harsh at others ( if you see what I mean!! - depends
on what she is singing about!! ). Both are from Dundee -which has preserved
good Scots. They both sing about the harsh reality of the existence of Scots
speakers lives ( i.e working class and harsh!! ) - but also some of the
songs they sing are of real beauty.  They also sing traditional songs ( well
I know that Shenna Wellington does!! )

one point to note -is that Michael Marra doesn't always sing / write in
Scots -but sometimes in English too!!!
