I can agree with Kenneths words; I doubt if machine translations will ever
be
good enough to trust completely, although they seem to get an
'understandable'
output most of the time (written machine translations that is). But, as long
as
English words like 'competition' will be translated to Dutch 'concurrentie',
when speaking about some kind of singing contest, I don't see a great future
for this kind of machines.

It is very much true, though, that pre-set sentences and specific word
combinations can make specific translations much easier and faster. For
instance, when I make a Limburgish translation of the Gnome (a Linux OS),
the
pre-translated data (done with a script made by Kenneth) makes a great
difference.

Example:
contains      - haet
character     - teike
was not found - woor neet gevónje
could not     - kós neet
error         - faeler
read only     - allein-laeze
...

So, my guess is, it can never replace man-made translations by more than
±50%
(which doesn't make it useless!).

Van de website van Veldeke:

In samenwerking met de Raod veur 't Limburgs organiseert Veldeke Limburg
een "Liergank Limburgs", een opleiding voor diegenen die over een goede
kennis
van de Limburgse dialecten willen beschikken.
De opleiding komt tot stand dankzij subsidie van de provincie Limburg.
Nadat de cursus succesvol is afgerond, zal de geslaagde:

- een goed inzicht hebben in de taalsituatie in Limburg;
- inzicht hebben in de grammatica van het Limburgs;
- de spelling beheersen;
- kennis hebben van en inzicht in de literatuurgeschiedenis van het
Limburgs.

Met deze kennis en dit inzicht zal hij of zij in staat zijn anderen van
dienst
te zijn op deze terreinen. Veldeke hoopt dan ook dat deze brigade van
afgestudeerden een voorhoede zal gaan vormen in de actieve promotie van het
dialectgebruik.

De cursus zal worden gegeven op de maandagavond in Sittard, gebouw HEAO
Hogeschool Zuyd aan de Havikstraat. De locatie is goed bereikbaar met het
openbaar vervoer. De start is voorzien in november 2003.

Van de cursisten wordt verwacht, dat zij over ten minste een HBO-niveau
beschikken, de vereiste voorbereiding tot de colleges uitvoeren, een
twintigtal
colleges bijwonen, zich aan een schriftelijk en mondeling examen onderwerpen
en
een werkverslag inleveren. Aan de geslaagden wordt een diploma uitgereikt.

De kosten voor de deelnemers bedragen ? 150,- exclusief lesmateriaal e.d..
Op

verstrekt.
