Wij zocht'n in't veld noar'n mooie rooie voederbeit. Die wur dan oethol'd
met'n mes ( en hulp van opa meistal). Dan wurd'n der van allerlai
versiering'n an
de boetenkant oetkarfd en dan kwam d'r een keersie in.
Wij hadd'n dan alle lanteerns in onze klas hang'n tegen't schemer and dur
wurren priezen gev'n.
Mien opa kon altied heule mooie gezicht'n mokk'n oet beiten met'n hoop
wortelhoarden onner an de punt.
Sommig'n hadden gien beit,mor zo'n mooi oranje Chinese lampionnigie.
Wei leupen dan 'soavond's langs alle hoezen in ons streekie en zong''n:

Sint Martinus bischop
Roem van aale landen
Dat wij hier met lichies loop'n
is veur ons gien schaande.......
Hier woont een rijke man
Die ons wel wat gev'v kan
Geef mie een cent,appel of 'n peer,
Komm'n wie 't heule joar niet weer

D're was nog'n couplet,mor dat ben'k verget'n.

In de vieftiger joar'n waas d'r neit zoveil snoep,dus war'n wij al heul
bliede met een Appelsien ( sinasappel) of'n poar neuten oet de tuun. Het was
heul
spesioal om snoep te kriegen. D'r was wel euns BaZooka kauwgum of een reep
Mars
wur in stukkies sneden met'n mes zodat aal wat had. An't end van de oavend
wur alles onderling eerlijk verdeilt. 't Was wel spann'd as't pikduuster was
en
dan noar boet'n meugen!

I am trying to remember the song that we sang in Espelkamp in Westfalen.  I
recall it started " Suennermarten, gaumarten---.  Does this sound at all
familiar?

 I am back in Manhattan but if I could get a hold of one of those paper
lanterns with the candle inside I would walk around the city at night and
let people wonder what the hell I was doing.

On a different note, here is wishing the Bahá'ís among us a very good
Birthday of Bahá'u'lláh (بهاءاللَّه) tomorrow, November 12.  They are likely
to start their celebrations today after nightfall, and hopefully my
felicitations will still reach those in time who are well ahead of me in
time.
