This gets curioser and curioser Ron. Around Liverpool area a common greeting
is 'Oy Wacker'. Other variants include 'Oy Oop Wack'. This is probably just
co-incidental.

Probably ... but after the _em(e)u_ incident I'm not so sure anymore. I
coyly hesitate to venture a guess about the etymology of "whacker," but I
don't think there's a connection with Lowlands Saxon _makker_ (<Macker>) and
Dutch _makker_ 'chum', 'buddy', 'mate'.
I have no idea what the etymology of the LS and Dutch words is. "Maker"?
Might there be a connection with (Modern and Middle Scots _mackar_,
_maikar_, _maiker_, _maikkar_, _makare_, _makere_, _makkar_, _makker_,
_macker_, _makar_, _maker_, _makkar_, _maakar_ 'poet' (= "maker" =
"producer")? Apparently, these Scots words used to denote more than "poet"
at one time, according to the _Oxford Dictionary_ any artisan or
manufacturer. Coincidence, given that during the Middle Scots stage
Scotland was flooded with "Flemish" emigrant artisans? "Maker" would also
be _maker_ in both Dutch and Lowlands Saxon. Could this go back to some
kind of designation > form of address (e.g., "colleague
(artisan/manufacturer/weaver)") that involved "Flemings" in Scotland?
The Lowlands plot is thickening big-time now ... Or am I just halucinating,
tired and in dire need for some dinner late on Friday?
Hulp! Heeft iemand een etymologisch Nederlands woordenboek? Wat is de
oorsprong van het woord "makker"? By voorbaat bedankt.
Curiouser and curiouser indeed ...
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
