Dear Lowlanders,

The November issue of the (German language) press release series of the
Institut für Niederdeutsche Sprache (Bremen) is out:

Especially noteworthy are three items:

(1)
Following widespread protest, the Schleswig-Holstein State Ministry of
Culture has reversed its decision to eliminate a Lowlands Saxon (Low German)
language requirement for German language teachers.  This requirement
consists of no more than attending at least one LS-related lecture.

(2)
Arne Bruhn of Moorege, Schleswig-Holstein, has created a small wearable
badge carrying the sentence _Ik snack ok Platt_ ("I speak 'Platt' too").
The purpose is to identify Lowlands Saxon speakers and to invite other
speakers to use this "regional" language when addressing the wearer.  Bruhn
states that too many speakers use ("High") German with each other rather
than LS because they do not identify each other as LS speakers.  Bruhn's
campaign appears to be a roaring success.  A bank has donated €5,500.-
(Euro) to fund production of the first batch of badges.  Demand exceeded all
expectations: the badges were snapped up like hotcakes, have all
disappeared.  Plans for replenishing supply are underway.  Further

(Might this be an example speakers of Zeelandic, Limburgish, Netherlands Low
Saxon, Scots, Appalachian and other minority language varieties ought to
follow?)

(3)
Creation of a copyright-free Linux and GNOME desktops in Lowlands Saxon (Low
German) is underway. Help is needed, especially with creation of terminology
