From: R. F. Hahn <sassisch at yahoo.com>
Subject: Resources

Folks,

Thanks to Erkki Sinijärv of Estonia, there is now an Estonian version of my
introductory blurb "A few words about Low Saxon (Low German)" / "Ein paar
Worte über das Niedersächsische (Niederdeutsche, Plattdeutsche)":
English: http://www.sassisch.net/rhahn/low-saxon/lowsax-engl.htm
German: http://www.sassisch.net/rhahn/low-saxon/lowsax-deutsch.htm

Estonian: "Paar sõna alamsaksi (alamsaksa) keelest"
http://www.geocities.com/erkkisin/saksa.html

This is Mr. Sinijärv's introduction to his translation:

***
Siin on Reinhard Hahni arvamus alamsaksa ja pärissaksa keele ja kultuuri
suhetest. Autor keskendub muu hulgas terminite üle vaidlemisele — _saksa_ ja
_(alam)saksi_. Nende väga sarnaste sõnade vahel vahe tegemine võib
eestikeelse tõlke lugemisel häirima jääda, aga tegu on sunnitud lahendusega,
nagu neid tõlkimisel mõnikord ette tuleb. Siiski loodan, et sisust ei läinud
midagi kaduma.
***

"Kirjatööde koht" (http://www.geocities.com/erkkisin/) -- Mr. Sinijärv's web
collection of essays -- contains interesting information on a number of
linguistic subjects in Estonian and Finnish.

As many of you are probably aware already, besides Scandinavian and Baltic
language varieties, Estonian and Livonian -- both of them Finnic, thus
Uralic, languages -- are particularly strongly influenced by Medieval
(Lowlands) Saxon ("Middle Low German"), at least lexically. This is due to
direct contacts during the Hanseatic trading period in which LS served as an
international lingua franca. It is also die to Scandinavian, Finnish and
Latvian influences and thus indirect loaning from LS. Information about LS
and explanations of these hitherto reportedly "German" influences is thus
likely to be of interest for speakers of Estonian and Livonian, if alone for
historical reasons. Mr. Sinijärv's contribution is therefore as welcome as
it is flattering.

I very much hope that not long from now there will be web resources with
more detailed relevant information, such as lists of loans, to illustrate
the connections between the Lowlands and the Eastern Baltic areas. This may
require collaboration of various sorts, and such collaboration in itself
ought to be another important step in the direction of strengthening
awareness and a sense of connection. Our own Edward Sproston has made a
start with an introduction to LS influences on the Nordic languages in our
ongoing (?) project "Lowlands Talk" (http://www.lowlands-l.net/talk/), and
he is likely to follow this up in some for or other.

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
