Hai all,
Ron wrote: Take for example <schrift> ([SrIft] writing, script) versus
<schryven> (['Sri:vm] to write). Should the former be spelled <schrivt>
instead?
Holger commented: In EFLS end-consonants are often voiced or in a medium
state between voiced and unvoiced [v]/[f] - and "wī sğrīven" = we write has
the same shape like the infinitive "sğrīven". (sorry for the 'funny' copy,
but some characters on my laptop still come out as squares).
I am not a linguist, but I have studied linguistics. My comment would be: I
don't speak EFLS, but in Dutch there are other examples, such as: leeft /
leven, half / halveren, geloof / geloven. I do pronounce the two consonants
differently and I believe that the 'f' in the final consonant (-cluster) is
the 'original' sound and should be voiceless, whereas the medial 'v' has
become voiced under influence of the 'e' that follows it.
Groeten, Jannie Lawn-Zijlstra
