Hallo Laaglanders
Hello Lowlanders
Concerning Afrikaans: I was saddened to see that some people view my
language as "the language of apartheid". I guess it does make sense if you
think about it, but it is not something that ever occurs to you when you are
a schoolkid in Afrikaans class! The thing is that not everybody who speaks
Afrikaans agreed with apartheid.
In 2002, when I was last in South-Africa, I was shocked to see that there is
now English subtitles for Afrikaans on tv. It was a series with a wide
variety of languages in it, but only Afrikaans had subtitles. ( I think it's
unfair!) It will result in English first-language speaker to stop bothering
about learning Afrikaans.
About the statistics, is that for people who speak Afrikaans as their home
language? I have never met a black South-African who could not speak at
least a little bit of Afrikaans. I've read somewhere than Afrikaans is the
home-language of 60% of the white population, and 90% of the coloured
population. I believe that there are definitely more coloureds and blacks
who speak Afrikaans than there are whites, simply because there are less
whites to begin with!
