Hi Heiko,

This is very interesting, and unfortunately quite normal when one considers
the
situation the Belgian border habitants have to put up with.
Belgium used to be multilingual, but more and more one gets the impression
that Francophone "pressure" has increased. It could also be the
laissez-faire
attitude of modern times.
 A large drive to teach cross border employees the Luxembourgish language is
under way, particularly in the large supermarket chains, so there is hope
that
the Arlon (Arel) dialect will be maintained for some time

In Luxembourg the language, Letzebuergesch, is taken as such and is no
longer seen as a dialect, in fact French is now classed second in the eyes
of
officialdom.
The school children learn in Luxembourgish for the first few years, German
is
then added, later French joins in and a lot later English can be learnt.
A good many children are thus quadrilingual, many though (immigrant from
Italy,Portugal, Ireland etc etc) speak 5 or 6 and write and speak as many as
4
fluently.
This is one of the foundations of Luxembourgs' continuing strength, no-one
likes to do business with an interpreter in between the parties.

Those of you with digital sat dishes can listen to Letzebuergesch on two
channels of ASTRA 1, it was in fact East-Frankish Moselle but then
other nations came and went but instead of just leaving their footsteps they
also
left words, which help to make the mik-mak of todays language.
