Subject: Administrativia
Folks,
Some of you may wonder why once in a while I post a request or announcement
I receive from a non-subscriber. Do I have a policy or rule? I do, and I
would like to suggest that everybody use it as a general guideline in
sharing requests or information from non-subscribers.
I pass on to the List only outsiders' communication if I consider it or
expect responses to it to be useful to the subscribers of Lowlands-L.
Nick Saunders' question about _Oor Wullie_ today and "oor" Sandy's response
to it serve as a good example. I expected the response to be of interest to
many of us, and Sandy did not disappoint me (as usual). Thanks, Sandy. Not
only is this literary piece and the information about it interesting to the
Scotophiles among us, but it also supports the use and dissemination of
information about Lowlands language and culture, and hopefully this way it
will be used and known more accurately and fully than without Sandy's help.
In this case it furthermore supports and encourages information about one of
our minority or "minoritized" languages to be disseminated to a larger group
of people.
Once in a while someone asks me to translate (for free) a phrase or even a
letter they found somewhere, or they want me to explain the background of
something. Most of the time it is information that is useful only to that
person and his or her circle, nothing of general interest. When I did
oblige in the past, less than 50% of the time I would not get as much as a
"thank you" once the person had what he or she wanted. I've become far more
selective with this sort of thing in the meantime, although I generally keep
trying to remain nice (?). Most of the time people could easily find the
information by doing simple web searches. (I am not going to do it for
them.) I oblige only if it's a very easy and quick task, something I can be
reasonably asked to do for free and expectedly without thanks. Sometimes
people ask me to submit their queries to the List if I don't have the
answers. Again, I do so only if I see benefits to the List and to the
"cause" in it. If people are serious and their interests last more than an
hour or so, they would consider subscribing.
This is how I operate these days. I am open to suggestions, though.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
