Dag almal,
'vrolike man' sou beteken.

stel.
Hugo, take note that the surname here closes with the 's' pronounced -
GouwS. I did make the point that the attribution of the name to the
political body is a 'folk' etymology (which is as much as to say I am
unwilling to defend it on those grounds). My interest in this remains,
though, the issue you raised, that this family claims with pride a 'van' the
first users accorded in contempt.
On the other matter, the later application of the term to Gomarists
doesn't seem to have been retained, perhaps because they deemed that battle
already won? The VOC did not - officially - recruit Papists into its ranks.
But we all remember over here, some with an ardent pride, what the 'Sea
Beggers' did to Phillip of Spain, & the Duke of Alva.
Groete van 'n Afrikaner.
Mark Dreyer.
