I have done some research on medieval naming practices. I have heard that
they did not always simply inherit Dad's name. For more information about

In Holland, the spokesman for a professional organisation for pilots is
always asked to comment on airplane crashes. His name is Baksteen (brick)
and in Dutch we have the expression 'vallen als een baksteen' (fall like a
brick)...
Another one: the chairman of the 'De Ruyter' Maritime Academy here in
Vlissingen is Dick Schipper (schipper = skipper, captain).
And a bit on the edge: the frontman of the extreme right Afrikaner
Weerstandsbeweging is called Eugene Terre'Blanche...

Lee and Ron

In my recently lost library I had an interesting book published by the
Walter deGruyter Company on German family names.  According to the book, at
the time of Maria Theresa the Jews of  Galicia had not assumed the custom of
taking on family names. It was decided hat they would have to conform and
take on family names.  However it was also decided that they would not be
allowed to take on family names used by christians, nor would they be
permitted to assume Hebrew names.  They would also have to pay for the
priviledge.  The ones who were too poor to pay the fees were then given
ridiculous names by the local officials.  I would assume that the ancestral
Dreyfus was poor because the name means "three feet".>
