Subject: Resources

Dear Lowlanders,

A friend and brand-new Lowlander (Hi!) drew my attention to the website of
the P3 Project, a worldwide philanthropic effort:
http://www.p3international.org/

At least at first sight, this looks like a great thing to me. I like the
idea of not only assisting the world's underprivileged with material and
educational giving but by providing them with access to worldwide
information as well. The term "Global Village" is being thrown around
rather too freely these days. This P3 organization reminds us of the actual
meaning and of the fact that building it takes a real effort, facilitated by
recent technological innovations.

If you click on "People groups" you get to a page that shows the world's
language communities in descending order, with speaker numbers and average
annual income. There is also a search field through which you can find
information about these and other languages. Surprisingly, Low(lands) Saxon
(Low German) is included, though only with reference to Germany, not to the
Netherlands, the Americas, Russia and Central Asia. Searches for Frisian
bring up the Netherlands, the United States of America, and Canada, not
Germany. Not yet listed are Scots (UK, the Americas, Australia, New
Zealand, South Africa, etc.), Limburgish (Netherlands and Belgium), and,
outside the Lowlands, Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian (Germany), and
Kashubian (Poland). There are others. So, the site could do with some
help in the area of minority language group information, given also the fact
that minority groups tend to be less privileged. Since the organization
solicits help, perhaps intererested Lowlands-L members ought to provide
relevant information (and other forms of assistance).

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
