Most certainly not off-limits, and just for that reason not suitable for
jokes and silly allusions that one doesn't fully understand. Just like
slavery, colonialism, and all other forms and instances of mass-murder and
genocide of "inferior" people, which all "civilized" countries have had
their share of, and none of them have reason to be proud.
