Hi all

have there been any suggestions for l-lowlands anniversary celebrations? Has
the anniversary already gone without anything happening?

How about soundbites of people reading the lowlands introduction in whatever
dialect they usually speak. I'd love to hear some of the dialects after
having only seen them written in print. I don't know if this would be a
mammoth project and much too difficult - I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes
to technical things, but I could imagine a map which you click on and hear
the local dialect. All it needs (ahem) is for people to send recordings of
themselves with the exact location of where they're from or which area
dialect their accent most closely resembles.

As said don't know if that would be a huge amount of work for someone, but
it's an idea...

Hi, Gary, mi' mate!

Hey, you're getting today's gold star!  I've been getting tired of dropping
hints and suggesting activities. So I'm glad to see someone else come up
with something for a change.  For some reason I'm not surprised it's you.
(Now don't you feel flattered?)

I like your idea!  However, I'm not so sure I'll have the time to actually
*do* it, though I'd be happy to do my bit by recording the intro in LS
(hopefully not the only dialect of it).  Do I take it you'd do the honors
with Estuary English?

I suggest we volunteer some people.

We need a person who knows something about sound files (of minimal size) and
how to digitize cassette tape recordings in case some people prefer to stay
with low-tech.  At any rate, it ought to be someone who would gather the
sound recordings and standardize them, compress them, whatever ... (if
necessary).

Then we'll need someone who'd be willing to put this onto our website,
hopefully also make the map.  (I could possibly make the clickable map if
necessary.)  Of course, Mathieu van Woerkom comes to mind, but I don't want
to strong-arm him.  Besides, we could use a team perhaps.

So then we need people who will record the text in tape or sound-file
formats.  Go to the "Language Varieties" menu at our webpage
(http://www.lowlands-l.net) to see what we are dealing with.  We could have
more than one person/dialect for each language.

So, do we have any volunteers for the above?

If we don't want to use the intro, we'd have to come up with another text.
