Subject: Introduction

Edwin, your posting gave me the impression that you wanted to learn
Mennonite Low German in order to teach your children. I think that the best
educational opinion is still that you shouldn't try to do this, or even
speak to them except in your own mother tongue, until they have a good
command of both languages. You will actually learn Mennonite from them! If
I'm wrong about this I'm sure other people on the list will correct me. I
think it's important for children to be able to communicate with their
grandparents, and it probably helps them if each of their parents can talk
to their in-laws. I feel very sorry for the monolingual parents of a German
friend of mine because her sons refused to try to communicate with them and
she wasn't firm enough about it.

Good luck with all your languages.
