I am bowled over by your brilliant presentation of your carefully thought

Hello all,
Just thought I'd pop my head above the parapet to say hello and, perhaps,
even join in....
What William of Occam actually said was "Pluralitas non est ponenda sine
neccesitate", literally something like "Don't posit multiplicity unless
necessary", but floats about in various translations, the most common of
which being "don't multipy unnecessary entities". The essential principle
seems to be that, given two theories, the one that requires the smallest
amount of explannatory apparatus to account for the facts should be
accepted. Many scientists, and most philosophers, now take this as a given
when forming any kind of hypothesis. But I agree with John: exactly how it
should be interpreted (and how profound a principle it may be) remain
something of a mystery
