I know Ron is very sensitive about certain things so I hesitate to raise
this point but I had to pause when I read: >How "American" of you to refer
to the bossy, scary conductor as "Obersturmbann" (= Obersturmbandführer)! <

I've been trying to imagine what responsibilities this particular Führer
might have. There was a character in post-war British radio comedy (played
by Jack Train on "ITMA") called "Colonel Chinstrap" but there surely can't
be a connexion. I've concluded that he must rather boringly be an
Obersturmbannführer, as the original posting suggested.

Apart from that I don't think one should worry too much about this kind of
usage. The implication is bossy, not all the other things we (not
unreasonably) associate with Nazism. Would it have been OK to allude to him
as a "Hauptmann [von Köpenick]"?
