Isn't it amazing - I myself just had been on the opposite way. I thought it
could be a wrong transition of 'Peer-Rettich', meaning LS: 'Peer-', E:
'horse-' and '-radish'. Because- I don't think that there is any connection
to G:'Meer' (deriving from Latin:'mare'), E: 'the sea'.

Perhaps its origin really is the Old Saxon/OHG: 'marh', HG: 'Maehre',
meaning  E:'[old] horse', though I also found in OHG: 'menwa, menewa, manwa,
maniwa' for 'horseradish'.
