Hello Ron, About a month ago I sent you a small contribution under the
heading "Games" It apparently never made it by the electronic Cerberus at
the LL-L door, but since I did not get an e-mail from you saying that this
little bit of childlike nonsense had no place on the pages of this
illustrious, intellectual forum and since the end of "Komkommertijd" is
nearing, I am trying again. It is a memory of pre-electronic times, when
life under the apple tree was simpler, a little bit of levity before the end
of summer. I would totally understand if you would "nix" the project, but I
had fun with the memory. Jacqueline
Hello Lowlanders,
In one of your "Etymology" strains Heather makes the remark >"Btw, _pikken_
means 'to nick', 'to steal' in Brabantish.< That reminded me of a wonderful
game that my Twentse Grandmother played with us grandchildren.
It is called "PIK".
You need: One Oma or Mother to organize the game.
Anywhere from four to twelve children between the ages of four and twelve,
One table
One large bag of small colorful candies (jellybeans maybe.)
The rules of the game are as follows:
About 20 pieces of the candy get spread out over the table.
Oma declares one of the children (the birthday boy/girl first) to be "it" .
This child leaves the room.
The other children determine which of the candies is the "loaded" one.
The player is then allowed back into the room and starts taking the candies
one by one.
The moment he/she takes the loaded candy, everybody yells
PiiiiiiiiiCK!!!!!!. The kid may keep his candy.
Oma replenishes the stash on the table and sends another kid out of the room
until all the children have had a turn.
None of my children's American friends knew the game, but all liked it and
kept asking for it (no wonder there was candy involved).
So that is for you folks with children and/or grandchildren of that age.
Jacqueline

Jacqueline,
I'm not in the habit of rejecting submissions without explaining it to the
originator, and this only happens once in a blue moon and usually involves
the suggestion to resubmit it edited.
I don't remember seeing this submission before. Good thing you kept a copy.
It's very much advisable.
Cheers!
