From: Heiko Evermann <heiko.evermann at gmx.de>
Subject: LL-L noch ein vermisstes Wort
Moin Ron, moin everyone,
I am (once again) looking for a missing word in Low Saxon. Again my
dictionaries leave me standing in the rain.
I am looking for translations of High German
1) eindeutig (unambiguous)
2) zweideutig
N) mehrdeutig (ambiguous)
I have found
Dutch
1) ondubbelzinnig
2) dubbelzinnig
N) dubbelzinnig
and Swedish
1) entydig
2) tvetydig
N) mångtydig
My LS-dictionaries don't give me a clue. I have, however, found 1)
"eendüdig"
several times on the web and 2) "mehrdüdig" once on
www.botschaft-ostfriesland.de/ cgi-bin/skripte/scriptp_wortbuch.pl?view=m
is "mehrdüdig" correct or is it a HG influence? Can dubbelsinnig be
confirmed
in LS literature? Any other suggestions?
Thanks a lot for your help,
kind regards,
Heiko Evermann

Moin, Heiko!
_...duydig_ (_...düdig_), like the verb _duyden_ (_düden_) 'to point out'
and the adjective/adverb _duydlich_ (_düütlich_) 'clear(ly)',
'unambiguous(ly)', is a long established word, and I don't perceive it as
German-derived. Both have ancestors in Middle Saxon at the very least.
Without much pondering, I would use the following or would perceive them as
acceptable if I heard or read them:
(1) unambiguous, unequivocal:
eynduydig (eendüdig)
(2) ambiguous, equivocal (between two choices):
tweyduydig (tweedüdig)*
dubbelsinnig ~ dobbelsinnig
(3) ambiguous, equivocal (between many choices):
meyrduydig (mehrdüdig)**
* e.g., _tweybedacht_ (_Tweebedacht_) as an alternative to
_twywel_ (_Twiewel_) 'doubt'
** e.g., _meyrvoldig_ (_mehrfolig_) 'manifold', 'multifaceted',
'multifarious' (German _vielfältig_)
I would accept the above suggestions as "technical" terms. In natural,
chatty style they might be paraphrased; e.g., (1) _Daar gifft 't man bloots
een Bedüden för_, (2) _Dat kannst up tweerlei Wies' verstahn_, _Dat kann
twee Bedüden hebben_, _Dat kannst so or so verstahn_, (3) _Dat kann 'n Barg
Bedüden hebben_, _Dat kann 'n Hümpel Saken bedüden_, etc.
I wonder what others think.
Kumpelmenten,
Reinhard/Ron
