many thanks for the 'Lammerstraat'! You obviously have a very voluminous
library of folk-songs.

Now I've to look for any neighbour who'll teach me the melody- I just
remember the refrain.

Dat leyd is in de meyrsten Neddersassischen rebeyden [gebieden] in de
Nedderlanden un in Duytschland bekand.

"Dyn" verschoon is in't Grönningsche (Nourdoost-Nedderlannen):

   Zien wief dai wol met hom goan.

   "Nee, wief, doe most toeze bliev'n,

I can't find a version from Germany right now, might have one back in
Seattle, though.

Nice bit of feminism there, isn't it?

My free (rough and ready) translation (from Groningen Low Saxon):

   A farmer wanted to visit his neighbor.
      Hey, farmer, hey!
   His wife wanted to go with him.
      Dom, dom, dom dey!

   "No, wife, you've got to stay.
      Hey, farmer, hey!
   You've got to spin and sew all day."
      Dom, dom, dom dey!

   As the farmer came back to his house
      Hey, farmer, hey!
   He said, "Wife, what have you been doing?"
     Dom, dom, dom dey!

   But his wife took a (laundry?) stick
      Hey, farmer, hey!
   And hit him on his head.
     Dom, dom, dom dey!

   And the farmer went to complain to his neighbor,
      Hey, farmer, hey!
   "My wife has hit me on the head."
     Dom, dom, dom dey!

   And the neighbor said, "Well, is that so?
      Hey, farmer, hey!
   My wife happens to do this too."
     Dom, dom, dom dey!
