The discription you give reminds me strongly at Dutch 'deinen' (1618), (to
heave ), Frisian 'dynje' East-Frisian 'dinen'. Etymology unknown (van
Dale). (In Dutch) it's often used in connection with ships. There's also a
verb 'grasduinen' (to browse, to take 'a volonté').
