I use it quite often because it is quicker when chatting. It is also
quite handy when you are sending text messages (SMS) since there is a
limit on 160 chars and this way you use less chars :)

cu (see you), u (you), u2 (you too), 2day (today), 4ever (forever), w8
(dutch wacht), n8 (dutch nacht), l8r (later), sk8 (skate).

It happens in most languages. Internet and sms'ing has made people
invent shorter ways of writing most often used words, like for instance
Brazilian Portuguese:

vc (você), bjos (beijos), tb (também), pq (por que)

The same has happened when it is not possible to write all the chars in
use in the language
naum (não), eh (é), etc.
