Gabriele,
You gave us as an example Psalm 23 in Low Saxon as published in a Lutheran
hymnal, and you say that it is a beautiful piece of literature,
irrespective of what one's belief may be. I do agree. (And I have you
give me credit for agreeing with you at times.)
However, it is in my opinion also an example of a bit too much poetic
license. I find many such examples in contemporary Bible translations,
both in German and in Low Saxon. Perhaps this is because those are not
translated from the Hebrew and Greek but from earlier German translations.
For example, _... un lett mi drinken an de klare Quell_ (lit. "... and
lets me drink from a clear wellspring" -- where _Born_ is the authentic LS
word) is blatantly mistranslated. This is where I say in my translation
_... deit mi na stille Water leden_ (lit. "... leads me to still waters"
-- yes, Heather, with auxiliary "do").
Hebrew: ×¢×Ö¾×× ×× ××ת ×× ×¦××ר×
`al-mêy menuchoth yenaSiyvadiy
("to-water-f.pl. still-f.pl. lead-m.-me")
English Standard: He leads me beside still waters.
Contemporary English Version: You lead me to streams of peaceful water
English International (UK): ... he leads me beside quiet waters
German (Luther): ... und führet mich zum frischen Wasser
(Aha! "fresh water"!)
Dutch 1: ...en wijst mij de weg langs kabbelende beekjes
("and shows me the way along babbling brooks" !!!)
Dutch 2: ... laat me rusten aan het water.
(Hmmm ... "lets me rest by the water")
Afrikaans: ... na waters waar rus is, lei
(Same)
Griqua Afrikaans: Hy lei my na waterse tissenie deine in
("tissenie deine in ???")
W. Frisian: Hy fiert my sêftkens oan fredige wetters.
(More accurate, with the addition of "gently")
Danish: Til Hvilens Vande leder han mig
("to the waters of rest")
Norwegian: ... han leder mig til hvilens vann
(Same)
Swedish: ... och leder mig till källor med friskt vatten
("and leads me to wellsprings with fresh waters")
Russian: ... и Ð²Ð¾Ð´Ð¸Ñ Ð¼ÐµÐ½Ñ Ðº водам ÑиÑ
им
("and leads me to still waters")
Chinese: é æå¨å¯å®æçæ°´é
("leads me to the side of water where one can drink peacefully")
And this is only one small example ...
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
