Beste Jonny,

Je citeerde wat uit Schiller in je laatste bericht, maar ik weet niet of
ik zijn boodschap wel goed begrepen heb.

Schiller lijkt te willen betogen dat het geloof in 1 (en slechts één)
god (in tegenstelling tot veelgoderij) een noodzakelijke (en misschien
ook voldoende?) voorwaarde was voor het ontstaan van de Verlichting
("Äufklärung"). Hij lijkt dit uniciteitsbeginsel blijkbaar een gewisse
vooruitgang te vinden.

Begrijp ik het goed zo? Dat is mijn enige vraag, want spijtig genoeg is
mijn Duits niet echt schitterend te noemen.

Over de inhoud van deze stelling wens ik niet te redetwisten want dat
zou ons hoogst waarschijnlijk buiten het linguïstische kader voeren...al
kan niet ontkend worden dat veel filosofische problemen een
linguïstische oorsprong hebben *s*.
Ik vertrouw echter op de stuurvaste hand van Ron om deze heikele
problematiek in goede banen te leiden.

Bedankt voor het vertrouwen en voor de verantwoordelijkheid ...  gloov ik.

Luc is quite right in pointing to the sensitive nature of the things that 
came up in this thread.  When I initiated it I had nothing sensitive or 
partisan in mind.  It was an expression of mostly concern for our members 
and/or their relatives and friends in London.  So it was purely on a 
personal level, although I did append quotes that dealt with hate; but even 
those were not to be taken as political statements but as statements about 
the human condition.  However, besides the hoped-for "We're all right" 
messages we got a few philosophical and political responses.  I had to 
reject two of them because of their clearly violent and inflammatory nature, 
and this sort of thing occurs rarely.  It goes to show that we had best 
stick to language and culture as much as possible, although, of course, 
nothing is entirely spearate from philosophy and culture.

Unfortunately, despite disproportinate media attention, there were and are 
worse things going on in the world.  London bombings pretty much coincided 
with and overshadowed the anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, one of 
many attrocities we had hoped would have ended with World War II.  Singling 
out the London incident for personal reasons was not to consider it more 
important.

Back to language and culture then!
