Not only Asia. The Ashanti of West Africa have incredibly bibulous funerals. 
There are tales of mourners falling drunkenly into the grave and nearly 
being buried with the corpse. It is a tradition for mourners to cover the 
body in the coffin with paper money  which is not removed. In oldre day sit 
was gold dust that was used.
