Songs: Sarie Marais
Dear Jean
Sarie Marais is a song very well known in South Africa, and
originating there in Boer War time: a song lamenting the vicissitudes of war
through a love song. You can find its words and tune at
http://www.civilwarpoetry.org/union/songs/sarie.html
It derives from an American song Sweet Ellie Rhee, but that song is
so appalling in sentiment expressed that I mention it only in the interest
of scholarship and move on smartly.
This is my own version of Sarie Marie in Scots:
Faur awa ben ma hert bydes ma Sarie Marais
That I’m aye in the howps ti see –
she steyed doun aboot in the Mooi watter airt
afore we’d aa this weir ti dree.
Haud awa hame til the auld Transvaal
that’s whaur ma Sarie bydes;
doun thonner in the mealies bi the green thorn tree
thare bydes ma Sarie Marais –
doun thonner in the mealies bi the green thorn tree
thare bydes ma Sarie Marais.
I wis feart thae Khaki deils wad lay me bi the heels
an ship me owre the sea foriver –
I fled awa frae bauns, lenth o Upington sauns
doun bi the muckle Orange River.
Haud awa hame til the auld Transvaal
that’s whaur ma Sarie bydes;
doun thonner in the mealies bi the green thorn tree
thare bydes ma Sarie Marais –
doun thonner in the mealies bi the green thorn tree
thare bydes ma Sarie Marais.
Thae Khakies is a pest lik the crocodile baest –
thay will hale ye til the watter oot o haun –
an sail ye oot the bay for a lang an weary day
the deil kens whaurna til ye’r gaun.
Haud awa hame til the auld Transvaal
that’s whaur ma Sarie bydes;
doun thonner in the mealies bi the green thorn tree
thare bydes ma Sarie Marais –
doun thonner in the mealies bi the green thorn tree
thare bydes ma Sarie Marais.
But we wan awa free, an it’s road time hame
til the auld Transvaal an hame;
whaur ma dearie keeps for me whit I dout she’ll shuirly gie:
a cheeper on ma cheek again.
Haud awa hame til the auld Transvaal
that’s whaur ma Sarie bydes;
doun thonner in the mealies bi the green thorn tree
thare bydes ma Sarie Marais –
doun thonner in the mealies bi the green thorn tree
thare bydes ma Sarie Marais.
Regards
John Law
