Oddly enough, this is the same as the Southern German (Suebian) word
"Bühne", which also means "Dachboden", "attic". I was very surprised back in
1984 when I looked at flats to rent in Ulm, when prospective landlords told
me on the phone that it came with what I thought meant a "stage".

Ron, it's "halibut", not "halibutt", but according to Chambers the name
still comes from "holy butt", because they used to eat it a lot on festive
occasions. Sounds more like a cussword to me...

My Dutch ex-husband taught me that a true coast-dwelling Netherlander only
distinguishes two kinds of birds: "paalsijsies" (birds that perch on poles)
and "drijfsijsies" (birds that float on the water) - on other words, they're
probably all seagulls. It seems that the name "sijs" or "sijsje" (Carduelis
spinus, siskin, Zeisig) is also sometimes used as a general (somewaht
humorous) word for birds in Dutch. He also used the word "pieten" a lot for
small birds, especially for parakeets and canaries ("canariepieten").

Just answer this e-mail like this: it may not be regarded the proper way,
but ...

I do not know the Dutch word "begeilen", 'though I knew "to beguile" from a
song "Bewitched ...etc.".
I know "geilen" on somebody as wanting sexual contact or just plain being
fond of someone.
As far as I know this word didn't exist when I were young (late fourties),
but I remember that for kids the Dutch "geil" was used for sperm (We didn't
know this fancy word).

Thanks.  This is a typo I make often, though not consistently.  Is there
anything like "etymological interference"?  If not, there ought to be.
