Hi Ron and all
I just had a look on the BBC site that you mentioned about European
languages. For English they do write:
"English is a west Germanic language, most closely related to Scots"
I suppose it's a start - even if it doesn't get a mention on the
frontpage...

It deals precisely with this - what makes one language spread and another
die. It is v fascinating - and I'm only half way through the European
section!
