Ek herhinner my nou van die Noorse seegodin, Hel. In haar woning het die
verdrinkde seerowers net soos hulle slagveldgeseuwelde eweknieë in Valhalla
daglank plesierige oorlog gevoer en naglank net so lekker vees gevier.

= duidelik,
maklik sigbaar, deursigtend, blinkend ens.

I remember the Norse sea-goddess, Hel. In her dwelling the drowned
sea-rovers, just like their battlefield-fallen fellows in Valhalla, spent
the day in pleasurable warfare & the night just so happily in carousing. But
she, Hel herself was a sombre being, with only half a face.

Now I call to mind the prefix 'hel-' as such: You see it there in the name
'Valhalla'. As I decypher the word it means 'Bright Hall'. Ron, am I right?
The word is related to our Afrikaans 'hel' = clear, distinct, loud,
gleaming, bright (in the sunlight) &c. & 'helder' = clear, easily visible,
translucent, bright &c.

Isn't there a small town in Norway named 'Hel'? But that's surely a cold
place. The warmth of a bench by the fire, so we read out of those days gone
by, was always the longing of an exile, the 'Ardstapa'. Another bit: Our
heathen forefathers, when they first heard out of the mouths of the
missionaries of the punishment of the sinners, some of them reputedly
cheered, "We shall be warm in Hell!"

Groete,
Mark
