I missed that posting, and I wonder now if I would have caught
the pun (which was far from miserable, Arthur).

I always linked Limburg 'Vlaai' with Dutch 'Vla', a dairy
product, vanilla flavored, custard-like, but more pourable,
usually eaten as dessert, and one of the things I miss most
far from my home land.  The 'Blanke Vla' version is to kill
for.  Some versions of Vlaai I have seen had a vla-like sub-
stance at part of their filling.

Gustaaf,

Our Arthur seems to have been torn between his usual gentlemanlitude* and
that hidden devilishness that usally shows itself through a mischievious
streak we all know he has.  The pun came out too subtle, too subdued by the
gentlemanlitude*, the former knowing full well that on this list we won't
stand for any talk about tarts and open vlaais.

(* English learners, this is a silly word made up by me, not a real word.)

Etymologically though, "flan" and "flawn" are believed to come from Old
French _flaon_ (> _flan_ > Castilian _flan_), from medieval Latin _fladonem_
 > Italian _fiadone_ 'honeycomb'.  From the same source or from an older
Germanic source (*_flaþon_) come Middle Saxon and Middle Dutch _vlade_ (~
_vla_) 'pancake', also German (_flado_ > _flade_) _Fladen_ 'flat cake',
'flat bread' > 'cowpat', related to obsolete English "flathe," "flath."
John de Garlande's French-English glossary of 1450 has _flaones fartos :
flathen ystuffyd_ (stuffed flawns).

Personally, I would not be too surprised if Dutch _vlaai_ did indeed come
from either Early French or Early Castilian, but in that case I would expect
the origin to be something like (*_flado_ >) *_flade_ or *_flae_.  I am more
inclided to believe that _vlaai_ is a "dialectal" derivative from older
native _vlade_ (> *_vlaë_ > _vlaai_, i.e., d-elesion).
