Here's my wife's favorite* German proverb:

In der Not frisst der Teufel Fliegen.
(The devil eats flies if desperate.)

This one can also be used in reference to putting up even with the least
desirable choice, "better something than nothing."

* She loves everything containing _Fliege_ 'fly' and _Fliegen_ 'flies',
because she has always confused them with English "flea(s)" (because of the
sound, i.e. a "false friends).  It's now an insiders' joke.  For instance,
if I pet a street dog she'd say, "Oh, no! Fliegen!", and she refers to a
really grubby, run-down local movie theater as "Fliegen Palace" ("palace"
pronounced as though there were such an Italian word, pronounced
"pa-LAH-tchey").  (_Palazzo_ would be correct, of course.)  As you can
probably tell, we run a linguistically very interesting, if not confused,
household.  The main thing is it keeps us entertained, isn't it?
