Hello all,
The CD recording I have of this song is performed by the group
"Midiaeval Baebes" - I forget which album it's on, but they do a pretty
good job of it.

These poems bring to mind my favourite Middle English song (a fragment
generally thought to be 12th or early 13th C.)
Miri it is hwil somer ylast
ond fugeles song
oc nu negeth windes blast
ond weder strong
ey! hwat! this nicht is long
ond ic with wel mycel wrong
sorwe ond mourn ond fast
(Approx mod. E. trans:)
It's wonderful (merry) while the summer lasts
and birds sing
but now the winter's blast nears, and strong (wild) weather
Hey! what! this night is long
and I most unfairly (with great wrong)
sorrow and mourn and fast.
I'll let better poets than me try to put it in modern verse!
Paul

Below is my slightly changed Modern English translation:
Miri it is hwil somer ylast
ond fugeles song
oc nu negeth windes blast
ond weder strong
ey! hwat! this nicht is long
ond ic with wel mycel wrong
sorwe ond mourn ond fast
Fun it is while summer lasts
With birds' sweet song.
But here again are winds' harsh blasts
And storm squalls strong.
Hey! Ho! This night is long,
And I, tormented by great wrong,
Bear sorrow, grief and fasts.
Kumpelmenten,
Reinhard/Ron
