Dear Lowlanders,

As many of you must know by now, we are lucky to have a Jamtlandish version 
of the wren story as a part of our anniversary presentation:

It has been kindly contributed by Bo Oscarsson, arguably the foremost 
activist and scholar of the language.

Hopefully there will be an accompanying sound file sometime.

Anyway, at a Jamtlandish-specific site 
(http://www.astro.uu.se/~ns/jamska.html, which does have sound files)  I 
found a list of Jamtlandish words with their Swedish and English equivalents 
(http://www.republikjamtland.org/ordlista.html).  In it I found three words 
of apparent Low Saxon ("Low German") origin, possibly not not shared with 
Swedish.  I wonder if they reached the language via Norwegian, given that 
Jamtland used to belong to Norway and Jamtlandish, like (non-Danish-based) 
Norwegian varieties belongs to the West Scandinavian group (as opposed to 
Danish, Jutish, Swedish, Dalecarlian and Scanian belonging to the East 
Scandinavian group, Dano-Norwegian, or _bokmål_, being East Scandinavian 
with West Scandinavian substrates and admixtures).  I would be interested in 
any comments you might have.  Might these be native words rather than loans?

Jamt. = Swedish = English = Modern Northern Low Saxon

baus [baUs] = elak, framfusig = rude, pushy = böös' (boys') [bœ:Yz] ~ 
[bœ:Iz]
bihl [biK] = yxa = ax = Biel (byl) [bi:l]
farken ["farkIn]  = galt = male pig = Farken (varken) 'piglet' ["fa:k=N]**

* [K] is SAMPA for Welsh <ll> and Zulu <hl>.
**Mod. LS has _baar_ for 'male pig'.
