I'm afraid I inadvertently misslead you. The girl is a native New Yorker.
However, she was born in Chinatown to a very Chinese family. She speaks
English but her Chinese is limited to Cantonese.

When they were introduced, he began speaking to her in Mandarin (which he
learned in High School). He said that she did a double take like he had
never seen before.
Tom and all, I get that many times, and I love it! I have brightened so many
days by speaking languages that the foreigners would never imagine a white
guy speaking. I got to welcome a Pakistani lady to this country with a
simple salaam. She did a double take also. It doesn't break ice. It melts it
and it boils it!

I see. I would say that the same could very well apply, though not the
"ticket" part.

Aha! Did I detect an ear-to-ear grin there? So *now* we know what all this
passion about languages is all about! ("Look! I speak your language! Aren't
I cute? Let me first melt and then boil your ice, won't you?") Tsk, tsk ...
Watch out when in Scottsdale, ladies!
Utterly shocked and scandalized,
Reinhard/Ron
