Hello everyone:
I just saw an article on the ANSA (Italian news service) website in
Portuguese that Noam Chomsky has been elected the best intellectual in the
world. Here's the text:
LONDRES, 18 (ANSA) - O lingüista e ativista político norte-americano Noam
Chomsky foi eleito como melhor intelectual do mundo, segundo uma pesquisa
publicada hoje na Grã-Bretanha.
Chomsky, que nos anos 70 se destacou por seus trabalhos de gramática
transformacional, foi eleito como o melhor dos intelectuais vivos na
atualidade, segundo uma pesquisa realizada pela consultora Foreign Policy
para revista política Prospect, que entrevistou 20 mil pessoas em vários
países.
O acadêmico obteve 4.800 votos, seguido pelo escritor e filosofo italiano
Umberto Eco, com 2.500 votos.
Em terceiro lugar ficou Richard Dawkins, professor da Universidade de Oxford
dedicado a temas de ciência, o quarto ficou com o dramaturgo tcheco Vaclav
Havel e o jornalista Christopher Hitchens foi o quinto mais votado.
Os eleitores escolheram estas pessoas em uma lista de 100 candidatos.
O melhor lugar para uma mulher intelectual ficou em décimo primeiro e foi
para a norte-americana Naomi Klein.(ANSA)

Thanks, Mark!
Congrats, Noam! This news will not sit so well with his academic and
political adversaries, of which he has more than his fair share. Whichever
side you're on, you have to admit that Chomsky deserves credit for rocking
as many boats as rattling cages, thereby cranking up some brain activity
(and causing even more knees to jerk). Intelligent? Undoubtedly! Too
intelligent and daring for many people's tastes.
