Subject: Etymology

Leyve Jonny,

Twüschen "gau" un "ga-" givt dat schynts keyn verbinnen. De etümology is
nich licht, lykers nich unmoyglich. Kyk ünnen.

Dear Jonny,

Apparently there is no connection between _gau_ (fast, quick) and _ga-_
'go'. The etymology is not easy, yet not impossible. See below:

Language: quickly/fast # go

Low Saxon:  gau # ga- (<gau> # <gah->)
Old Saxon: gāh # gā-, gang- (gâh # gâ-, gang-)
Old Saxon: gālīk(o) # gā-, gang- (gâlîk(o) # gâ-, gang-)

Dutch: gauw # ga-
Afrikaans: gou # ga(n)
Old Low Franconian: gālīk(o) # gā-, gang- (gâlîk(o) # gâ-, gang-)

W. Frisian: ? # gea-
Old Frisian: gā (gâ) # gā- (gâ-)

Modern English: ? # go
Old English: ? # ge-, ga-

Cf.
Modern German: jäh* # geh- (* 'suddenly', 'abruptly', 'impulsively',
'rashly' < jach)
Middle German: gǣhe* (gæ^he) # gê(h)- (* also 'rush', 'hurry', 'precipice')
Old German: gāhi (gâhi) # gā- (gâ-)
Old German: gāho (gâho) # gā- (gâ-) (* also 'rush', 'hurry', 'precipice')

Eastern Yiddish: גיך gikh # -גיי gey-

Germanic:
*ganhu 'sudden', 'rash', 'abrupt'
*ganhī (ganhî) 'suddenness', 'rashness'
*ganhō (ganhô) 'suddenness', 'rashness'
*ganhō (ganhô) 'to act abruptly', 'to hurry'
*ganhjan 'to act abruptly', 'to hurry'
*ganhiþō (ganhiþô) 'sudden, unexpected event', 'fury'
*gangan 'to go'

*Indo-European: *k^êig_h- 'quickly’, 'suddenly'

Consider as well (tentatively):

Sanskrit:
गाढ gāDha (gâDha) 'strongly', 'vehemently', 'firmly', 'rashly', 'heavily'
गन्ढ gaNDha 'abrupt interchange (of question and answer)'

(Capital consonant letters retroflex.)

Kumpelmenten,
Reinhard/Ron
