"Mate" comes from _mate_ ~ _mât_ (cf. Early Modern Dutch _maat_ ~ _maet_ >
Modern Dutch _maat_). The original meaning (with _ge-_; cf. Old German
_gimazze_) was something like "fellow eater," 'someone with whom one shares
meals' (cf., English "meat"),<
So you eat meat with your mates and bread with your companions.

As if Mr. Smarty Pants didn't have any answer for this one. ;-)
You drink with a compotant, compotator or compotor. If there is none, you
spend quality potatory time alone with potato chips and compot(e). ;-)
