Heather, allemaal,

In Dutch exists 'run' for the bark of oak. Mdutch 'rinde', 'rindt',
'rende',' runde','runne' 'ruyne',' run' (bark) Osax, Ohg 'rinda' Oe rind
(eng rind) cognate with Md 'renden' (to tear up, to rend), Mlg 'rende'
(something broken), Ofries 'renda', 'randa' (to tear up, to break), Oe'
rendan' (to tear up, to cut), Oind 'randhra '(an opening, a tear, a crack).
Therefore the original meaning would have been 'tearing off the bark of
oak' (according van Dale).
Groeten,
Jo Thys
