I recall this being used as a nickname for any 'Charles' at school in the
50s - but the other examples, I get the feeling, followed the Aussie
invasion of the 60s/70s and became common parlance only after then. Doesn't
Strine love to make .....z words?

By the 80s when I was teaching it was common to see these forms Baz , Shaz
etc on graffitti
