Under the header "Shaw (et al.)" Reaney & Wilson begin with 'Simon de
Schage'
in 1191 and continue with 'Richard de la Shawe' in 1275 and 'John ate Shaw'
in 1295. They derive the name from Old English 'sceaga' meaning 'dweller by
the wood.' It is noted that 'Shea' may be from the Irish 'O'Shea' as well
as
from 'sceaga'; however, nowhere do they mention the possibility of a Romany
name becoming 'Shaw.' It would not be impossible, but 'Shaw' obviously is
not
basically a Romany name in England: there is no indication that the Romany
had
left the Indian Subcontinent by such an early date.

Subject: Names
I don't think that many if any Roma ancestors migrating into Europe had surnames
as we know them. Eurasian and North African Roma seem to have acquired surnames
much later, though I don't know exactly how.
The most prominent (and "royal") Sinti clan in my part of Hamburg has (or had)
the surname Weià (German for "White"). Roma tend to have surnames that fit in
with the countries in which they (predominantly) live.
The US commissioner for Roma affairs (a native Roma Romany scholar appointed by
Bill Clinton) has the name Ian Hancock. Consider other famous Romas's names
(including those of a few part-Roma):
Django Reinhardt (Germany, France)
Esma Redzpova (Macedonia)
Lolo del Carders (Catalonia)
Rumen Shopov (Bulgaria)
Novica RistiÄ (Serbia)
Boban MarkoviÄ (Serbia)
Nafisa Hasanova (Uzbekistan)
