Jacqueline,

I shall look into the history of knitting as soon as I can (I'll have to go
back to the hospital tomorrow for another three days or so). It's one of my
hobbies, my specialty being complicated Aran designs and Icelandic/Fair Isle
type sweaters.

As far as I know, at least around here, knitting socks was traditionally
done by men - shepherds who needed something to keep them occupied while the
herd was grazing (BTW, one quarter of my ancestors were Lower Saxon
shepherds, and I used to breed sheep in Oregon, just for the heck of it).
