Beste Lowlanders,
Ik heb de etymologie van "makker" in drie Etymologische Woordenboeken van
het Nederlands opgezocht. Tussen haakjes: "makker" wordt zowel in Nederland
als in Vlaanderen gebruikt, ev enals "maat".
Woordenboek J. Vercoullie, bijna een eeuw geleden prof. te Gent, maar die
Oostendenaar was:
    - makker, uit makke, met wegvallen van "ge" uit gemakke, Oud-Saksisch
gimako + Angelsaksisch gemaecca (Engels match) = gade, gelijke, van maken =
passen (vergelijk gemak).
Woordenboek J. de Vries:
    - makker: typisch Hollands woord, waarschijnlijk met de
verbreide -er-uitgang (vgl. bakker, herder) uit een ouder woord zoals
Oud-Engels gemaecca 'maat, genoot', Oud-Saksisch gimako, Oud-Hoogduits
gimahho 'maat'; zie verder gemak en maken
Woordenboek Van Dale:
    - makker (gezel): eerst uit de 16de eeuw bekend, vgl. Oud-Engels
gemaecca, naast gemaca (Engels match), Oud-Saksisch gimako, Oud-Hoogduits
gimahho , Oud-Noors maki (maat, makker), verwant met gemak, maken.
Tussendoor wat anders en het heeft niets met "makker" te maken: Het
West-Vlaamse, en dus ook Oostendse woord voor boterham of een stuk brood is:
STUUTE (vgl. Platduits en het Nederlandse Saksisch!
Tweede tussendoortje: een draaiboom of tolboom is in Oostende een "balie";
in Brugge is een "balie" een toonbank, a desk.
