When they're speaking some sort of Inklisk out by Barnard's Star, some time 
in the far future, this debate will still be going on.  My suggestion is 
based on the following logic:

1) The present system causes confusion amongst, and upsets,  a lot of 
people, both native and learner.
2) Any revision will cause confusion amongst, and upset, a lot of people, 
both native and learner.

Let's confuse  and upset 'em with the least effort: leave it as it is.
