On a very tenuously related (i.e., Lowlands and a medical environment) note, 
I was told a couple of years back by the South African ambassador to Ireland 
(at that time Melanie Verwoert) that Afrikaans is the lingua franca in a 
south Dublin hospital due to most of the nurses and doctors being South 
African.

I wish now I had asked for the hospital's name!
