>Actually, it's 35°C outside today in Lower Saxony (and 30°C in my home
office, I'm meeeelting), so our subtropical climate might just offer an
explanation for the lack of indigenous cheeses...<
A farmer in Devon has planted the UK's first olive grove! He hopes to be in
production with 6-8 years.
Perhaps with global warming, the Riveria will move northwards to Worthing
& Budleigh Salterton and make them the hot spots of Europe

There's the mark of a seasoned Lowlander! Nice save (from meteorology to
"Delectables"), Heather! Homage must be paid wherever due.
And I look forward to taste my first English olives, if I make it that far.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron

I would be interested to know if there are any South African cheese making
traditions and, if so, if they are Dutch-derived, British-derived or both, or if
they are of multiple origin.
Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
It never crossed my mind to look while I was there; all the cheese I saw was much
the same as I'd get in a supermarket in England.
My guess is that traditional Afrikaner animal husbandry, given the South African
environment, wasn't well suited to dairy produce of any kind. Their cows were
probably hard pushed to produce enough milk for their calves (tough place, the
Karroo).
Later British settlers might have given it a go I suppose, but if successful it
would have been the same cheese as back home.
