The 'pas' is not a negative concept

This is perhaps a marginal case.
Heather is right in pointing out that
ne...pas used to be the simple negation.
But nowadays the "pas" has developed
a life of its own, even in literary French,
cf. for example the exclamations
"pas vrai!" (not true) or "plus disponible"
(no longer available). In Occitan the "no"
has completely disappeared, and "pas"
has become the negation particle.
So French might have to be classified
as a borderline case as far as double
negation is concerned.
I guess I am digressing with FR and OC
clearly not been´ no LL languages.

I have heard "shnaime" but never j'aime pas. The two sounds are close.
