I have the vaguest recollection that Mike Leith's Life Is Sweet (1990), 
which featured some incomprehensible non-U English accents, was shown in 
America with subtitles, or, perhaps, maybe the critics and viewers just 
thought it ought to have been.

Ben,

Unfortunately, such attitudes are still very common, probably make up the 
majority, not only among Italians but in the rest of Europe and in North 
America as well.  Anything but "good standard" is not really considered 
"good," is in most cases just patronized, and it's worse when there are 
certain negative stereotypes of the speakers.  You don't need to travel far. 
Just think of "Southern" accents and Appalachian in the United States.  Most 
of us still have this ideal in our heads: the national person, he or she is 
above regionalism and ethnicity.  ("What's wrong with those people that they 
don't take advantage of this wonderful opportunity of putting behind them 
their backgrounds and becoming truly French ~ Italian ~ Greek ~ German ~ 
Polish ~ ...?")
